A Gazetteer of Designers, Nurserymen, Writers and Artists Associated with the Historic Gardens of Essex

Compiled and Written by the Essex Gardens Trust Research Group and Edited by Dr Twigs Way

Rooted in Essex tells the stories of the diverse and fascinating cast of characters who created and designed the wealth of parks, gardens and nurseries of Essex. Each of the entries in this alphabetically-arranged gazetteer focuses on a personality who not only contributed to the Essex landscape, but also made their home in the county.
Covering over five hundred years of Essex history, entries range from one of the earliest garden writers (Thomas Tusser), through Quaker plant collector (John Fothergill), to Edwardian eccentrics such as Ellen Wilmott.

Previously unrecognised contributors to Essex’s gardening past, such as the much-loved author Metcalfe Few, rub shoulders with creators of nationally famous sites, such as Easton Lodge (near Great Dunmow) and the Gibberd Garden (Harlow). There is something new for everyone in this information packed gazetteer.
